Travel concessions for elderly people

Travel Concessions for senior citizens
If you're aged 60 years or over, and your permanent address is in West Lancashire, you're entitled to apply for either:

  • an English National Bus Concession (Nowcard), or
  • a Senior Railcard, or
  • Travel Tokens

English National Bus Concession (Nowcard)Nowcard

Holders of this pass are eligible to receive free local off peak bus travel anywhere in England. Free travel is available from 9.30am onwards Monday to Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays.

 

A 'local bus service' is classed as:

  • any type of town bus service
  • a rural service which observes all bus stops
  • a rural service with limited stops but where the distance between stops is less than 15 miles. 

Services that observe stops over 15 miles are regarded as 'express services' and are excluded from the English National Bus Concession Scheme. The pass is not valid for travel in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

 

In addition to the above statutory entitlement, West Lancashire District Council customers who opt for this concession will also benefit from the following discretionary enhancements:

  • Free travel on community transport within West Lancashire (e.g. Dial a Ride and Tarleton County Cars). Available from 9.30am onwards Monday to Friday and all day on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.
  • Journeys starting or finishing in West Lancashire, pre 9.30a.m will be charged a flat fare of 50p per single journey for West Lancashire English Bus Pass holders.
  • Free travel on Blackpool Trams and Fleetwood to Knott End ferry. Available from 9.30am onwards Monday to Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.

If you decide to apply for this pass you can also buy a Senior Railcard for the discounted price of £20.00.

 

Senior Railcard
The Senior Railcard lets you travel for a third off the full price of most rail fares throughout Britain. You can also use it to receive a third off certain ferry and Seacat Journeys. This pass will last for 12 months from the date of issue, and is offered free of charge as an alternative to the English National Bus Concession.

Travel Tokens
Travel Tokens are offered free of charge as an alternative to the English National Bus Concession (Nowcard). They can be used on most local forms of transport i.e. Bus, Rail and certain taxis etc. If you qualify between 1 April and 30 September you'll receive an allowance of £28 per year. If you qualify between 1 October and 31 March, this allowance is reduced to £15. If you decide to apply for the Travel Tokens allowance you may also buy a Senior Railcard for the discounted price of £20.00.

 

How to obtain your Travel Concessions
If you hold an existing English National Bus Concession (Nowcard), Travel Tokens or Senior Railcard, you will be sent a renewal form before your current concession expires.

If you are a new claimant for Travel Concessions, you can apply at:
52 Derby Street, Ormskirk for Senior Railcards (Mon-Fri 9.00am-5.00pm), English National Bus Concession (Mon-Fri 9.00am-5.00pm), Travel Tokens (Mon-Fri 9.00am-5.00pm).
CSP, Skelmersdale for Senior Railcards (Mon-Thurs 9.00am-5.00pm, Fri 9.00am-4.45pm), English National Bus Concession (Mon-Thurs 9.00am-5.00pm, Fri 9.00am-4.45pm), Travel Tokens (Mon-Fri 9.00am-4.45pm).

 

Purchased Railcards

Nowcard national English bus pass or travel tokens holders who wish to purchase a discounted senior railcard for £20 should apply as follows:

By post: complete a purchased railcard application form and send it to - The Cashiers Section, WLDC, 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk, L39 2DF along with a cheque or postal order for £20.

In person: visit our Customer Service Points at 52 Derby Street or the CSP in Skelmersdale and complete the senior railcard form with our advisors. Once completed place this application form, along with a cheque or postal order for £20, in the Council post box.   

 

In both cases please ensure that your name and address is printed on the reverse of your payment. Your senior railcard will be issued to you by post within 10 working days. Please note - cheques and postal order should be payable to WLDC, we cannot accept cash or debit/credit cards payments.

 

Holders of exisiting railcards purchased from West Lancashire District Council can apply up to 2 weeks before your exisiting railcard expiry date. You must inform us within 6 weeks of applying for your discounted senior railcard if you have not recieved it by post. 

 

Important info - what you need to provide
To apply for your first issue of Travel Concessions you must produce evidence of:

  • age, which could be a birth certificate, current passport, full driving licence or pension documents
  • together with documentary proof of your National Insurance number
  • New claimants for an English National Bus Concession will also require a photograph - which will be taken by us at the time of application.
