Scrap metal

If you intend to operate as a scrap metal dealer then you must, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 apply for a licence with any authority in which you operate. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and subject to a fine.

There are two different scrap metal dealer licences as detailed below:

Site licence

A site licence authorises the licensee to carry on business at a site or multiple sites within West Lancashire. The fees for this licence are detailed below:

  • New application: £280.09
  • Additional named site on site licence: £181.05 (per site)
  • Variation to exiting licence: £82.35
  • Replacement licence: £16.48

Collector's licence

A collector’s licence authorises the licensee to carry on business as a mobile collector within West Lancashire. The fees for this licence are detailed below:

  • New application: £131.81
  • Variation to existing licence: £82.35
  • Replacement licence: £16.48

It is important to note that a person or company may only hold one of the above licences within West Lancashire and could not operate both a site licence and collector's licence.
