Business Watch in Burscough and
Skelmersdale

Did you know that businesses are more at risk of crime than
homes are? Protecting your staff and premises from crime makes good
business sense.
Local companies, West Lancashire District Council and Lancashire
Police have worked together to set-up two Business Watch schemes,
one in Skelmersdale and one in Burscough:
· The Skelmersdale scheme covers the Gillibrands, Pimbo and Stanley
industrial areas
· The Burscough scheme covers Burscough Industrial Estate and Abbey
Lane Business Park
The initiative aims to prevent thefts, break-ins and any other type
of anti-social behaviour and reduce crime on the industrial
estates.

How does Business Watch work?
The scheme works primarily through radio communication between
business premises. If employees see anybody acting suspiciously on
the estate they can report incidents to warn other companies to be
on their guard.
The District Council has provided funding, through the Northwest
Development Agency funded West Lancashire Inspire regeneration
scheme, for the radio base equipment for the system. Firms who join
the scheme can purchase their own radios to enable two-way
communication with other businesses and the Police. The radios also
allow them to report non-emergency incidents to the Police
Many businesses from the industrial estates have already signed up
to the scheme to show a united front that they will not tolerate
crime, but the more businesses join, the better it is for
everyone!
In addition to the radio scheme, on becoming a Business Watch
member, businesses will be issued with a Business Watch Member sign
to display on their premises. Member businesses will also receive
emailed crime updates from Lancashire Police and advice on business
support and grant opportunities for security or building
improvements in the district.
