Litter lesson 'bin' good for pupils
A litterbin is to be put outside the school gates of a busy
Skelmersdale school thanks to pupil power!
West Lancashire District Council recently received a letter from
youngsters on the School Council at Bishop Martin Primary asking
for extra bins around the building.
The pupils are very keen on keeping their school environment clean
and tidy and have already had a dog-fouling receptacle installed by
the Council. So they thought that it would nice to have more bins
to encourage the children to throw away their rubbish
responsibly.
As a result, the Council will be putting in the new litter disposal
point outside the main front gates on Wednesday 27th February. They
will also be giving the school some bags and litter picker
equipment so that the pupils can also organise their own clean up
day in the school grounds.
Cllr David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene Management,
said: "It's great to see that local children are taking a keen
interest in their environment and are asking their local Council
for help. We're delighted that we're able to put in a new litter
bin for them and are glad that they will be doing a community
clean-up, which will help them take pride in their area.
The District Council regularly joins local volunteers,
schoolchildren, residents associations and other organisations and
partner agencies such as the police in community clean-ups. With
the Easter school holidays approaching in March, the Council is
particularly keen to encourage schools to take part in such events.
