Spruce up your neighbourhood

18th February 2008, 08/39

Help spruce up your neighbourhood
With spring just around the corner what better time to get your neighbourhood in ship-shape than with a good old community clean up!

West Lancashire District Council regularly joins local volunteers, schoolchildren, residents associations and other organisations and partner agencies such as the police in such events. Together they work as a team to target untidy hot spots.

In the past few months a number of clean-up operations have taken place around Birch Green, Ashurst and some of the Cloughs in Skelmersdale to blitz the areas to make them green and clean.

During the events, the chosen areas will benefit from litter picking and general tiding. In some cases it will also involve general grounds maintenance work.

For these types of events, the Council will have staff attending the projects and will provide litter picking equipment, bags and a waste collection service.

The idea behind the community clean-ups is to involve local people in helping to tidy up their neighbourhoods and to improve the local environment. It's also a good way to engage with the community and to encourage them to take pride in their area.

Cllr David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene Management, said: "If you take pride in the area you live in and don't mind getting your hands dirty for the good of your neighbourhood, then why not get involved in a community clean up? They are a great way to improve the local environment in a fun and informal setting and a chance to mix with like-minded people."

With the Easter school holidays approaching in March, the Council is particularly keen to encourage schools to take part in such events. To find out how to organise a community clean up or to find out when any more are planned, contact 01695 577177 or visit our refuse pages.
