Beat the holiday burglar blues!

24 July 2008, 08/169

Beat the holiday burglar blues!

Pack up your troubles before you go on holiday this summer by registering your burglar alarm with the District Council.

Leaving your home unoccupied whilst you are on holiday can be a big worry but now you have the option of nominating someone who can be contacted in case of a burglary or nuisance alarm.

A continually ringing alarm, which causes disturbance to your neighbours, not only upsets and annoys them but is also an offence under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. In cases were annoyance is caused, the audible alarm may be disconnected following the complaint and the cost recharged to you.

Registering your alarm enables either the Council or the police to get in touch with a friend or neighbour if it goes off so that the alarm can be attended to as quickly as possible, reducing the interruption to the residents. Plus, it might save you friends and money in the long run!

There is no fee for registering, so before you pack your suitcase simply fill in the online form on our environmental protection page or you can download the forms and register it with us or the police in writing.

Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “Going on holiday can cause a lot of people to worry about leaving their home unoccupied so for peace of mind and a stress free trip make sure you register your alarm! Whether you go away or not this year, we recommend that you register your intruder alarm so that someone can be contacted in case of an emergency, then you can leave all your worries behind.”
