Respect your neighbourhood tenants told!
To combat anti social behaviour we have introduced a new tenancy
arrangement to ensure people behave themselves!
The ‘Respect and Responsibility Sign-up Statement’ sets out
rules for new tenants to abide by when they move into their Council
home in a bid to stamp out nuisance neighbours.
From now on, new tenants will have twelve months to demonstrate
that they can behave themselves and stick to their tenancy
agreement. If they don’t the Council will be able to evict them
more quickly and easily if they break the rules!
Another innovation is the introduction of ‘demoted’ tenancies.
This means that unruly neighbours could have their tenancies
demoted if they are taken to court by the Council. It would then
put a stop to privileges such as having no rights to buy their home
or they could face a speedier eviction if they carry on causing
trouble.
Cllr Val Hopley, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "All
residents should show consideration to their neighbours and respect
their privacy and property as well as their own needs and concerns.
We want to encourage tenants to care about their community, which
is why we have introduced these new tenancy agreements to curb
potential anti social behaviour.
"Evicting tenants from their home is the last thing we’d want to
do. We always try to warn, assist and work with people if they are
causing a nuisance before looking to take court action. However, in
those extreme cases were we have no alternative, these new
arrangements will make the process more straightforward."
