Dog welfare day, 6 July 09

06 July 2009, 09/140

Dog welfare day

Take the chance for your dog to have a free health check and microchip at a special event in Skelmersdale next week.

Tanhouse Community Centre in Ennerdale, Skelmersdale will be hosting a Responsible Dog Ownership Day on Monday 13 July from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

West Lancs Borough Council’s Dog Control Officers will provide a free dog micro chipping service as well as being on hand to provide information and advice about an array of dog-related matters. There will be free doggy health checks from the P.D.S.A.

The Council’s Dog Control Officers and the P.D.S.A. will be able to provide advice on dog care and welfare. Many problems related to dogs, including straying, fouling, aggression and welfare, can be caused by a lack of knowledge and/or understanding by dog owners. The objective of the day is to help dog owners understand their responsibilities and so prevent future dog-related problems.

Cllr Andrew Fowler, portfolio holder for Community Services and Health, said: “The Council recognises that the majority of dog owners act responsibly; however, the aim of the day is to help all dog owners play their part in ensuring their dogs don’t cause problems for others.

“By providing a free microchipping service, we hope that we can help reduce the number of stray dogs in the Borough. This will also enable us to reunite any stray or lost dog with their owners.”
