The summer months see an increase in activity in many insects,
but most commonly from black ants and wasps. Black ants are not a
health hazard, but can cause a nuisance. They enter homes through
small gaps in brickwork, doors and windows looking for sweet food
and when they find their way in, they do so in large numbers.
Wasps are also useful garden insects, but during those summer
months when they stop collecting food for the young in the nests,
they become free to search for sweet things and become a nuisance.
It is their ability to cause painful stings that can be the most
concerning, which can spoil our summer fun.
The Council’s website offers free Pest Control Fact Sheets that
are full of information and advice on how to control some of the
most common species of pest. The Pest Control Team also offer a
free insect identification service in case you have a problem with
a species you do not recognise so it can be successfully
treated.
Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services and
Health said: "Just because there are more ants and wasps about
during the summer does not mean we have to tolerate them invading
our homes and gardens.
"Simple steps such as not leaving out sweet and sugary food and
drinks and making sure that your property is in a good state of
repair all help towards a pest free environment."
