Calling all artists for West Lancashire Open Exhibition 2008

Do you have a flair for the arts? Then why not apply to take part in the prestigious West Lancashire Open Exhibition.

This year’s event will once again take place at the popular Chapel Gallery in Ormskirk and runs from 19 July to 10 September 2008.

Now in its seventh year, the high-profile exhibition is aimed at talented amateurs, students and professional artists who would like the opportunity to show their artwork to the public.

Application forms are now available from the Gallery to give ambitious creative people the chance to enter their works for possible inclusion in the exhibition.

Councillor Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "The Open Exhibition is a hugely popular event with artists from all over the UK entering work. Around 400 pieces were entered last year because people appreciate the opportunity to showcase their works in the attractive surroundings of the Gallery during the biggest exhibition of the year.

"I would urge anyone pursuing a career in art or those who have an interest in the subject to pick up an application form for the chance to exhibit their work. I’m sure that the end result will be a compelling showcase that supports established working artists and aids those hoping to develop a career, while offering encouragement to those who have an interest in art."

Anybody is welcome to enter their artwork and pieces ranging from painting, printmaking and photography to sculpture and textiles. All media are considered.

To enter the Open Exhibition applicants must be over 16 years of age and can submit two original pieces of artwork to be viewed by the selection panel.

The prizes are for 1st prize, £800, 2nd is £400 and third £200, with commendations also awarded. The other category is the Peoples Prize, where residents who visit the Gallery are invited to vote for their favourite works. The winner is then given the opportunity of exhibiting at the Gallery and is awarded a £150 exhibition fee.

The dates for submitting work are Friday 4 July and Saturday 5 July from between 10.00am and 4.00pm.

For an application form, please contact the Chapel Gallery on 01695 571328. Alternatively, pop into the Gallery, St Helens Road, which is open from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
