Pledge to tackle climate
change
West Lancs District Council has
pledged to take action to tackle climate change by signing up to
the Nottingham Declaration.
The declaration commits the Council
to drawing up plans with partner organisations and the local
community within the next two years to address the causes and
effects of climate change across West Lancashire.
Almost 330 local authorities have
already signed up to the declaration, which commits the council to
a series of actions including:
- Publicly declaring the commitment
to cut greenhouse gas emissions from council operations
- Assessing the risk associated with climate change and the
implications for council services and local communities and
adapting accordingly
- Encouraging all sectors in the local community to address the
causes and impacts of climate change
- Monitoring the progress of plans against the actions needed and
publishing the results
Cllr Martin Forshaw, portfolio
holder, said: "West Lancashire District Council is committed to
taking action to help the environment to tackling both the causes
and effects of climate change at the local level. The Council has
already adopted a strategy and action plan that focuses primarily
on council operations and services. It includes measures such as
reducing carbon dioxide emissions associated with gas and
electricity use in corporate buildings and reviewing planning
policies to maximise renewable energy.
"Signing the Nottingham Declaration
takes the Council a significant step further. Through the
Declaration, we are committing to playing our part in meeting
national greenhouse gas reduction targets and those in the Kyoto
Protocol."
