West Lancashire District Council

Unsightly weeds to be zapped

7th March 2008, 08/58

Unsightly weeds to be zapped
Nuisance weeds are being zapped by the District Council in its fight to keep West Lancashire clean and green.

Spring usually marks the start of the growth of these unsightly wild plants when the warmer months come in.

To combat the problem the Council has started a programme of weed spraying to kill them off before the district becomes overgrown.

Works have already started on all the major roads throughout the towns and villages across the district to tackle this issue. Then in the coming weeks the next phase will start to focus on housing estates and footpaths that suffer.

Further sprays will take place later on in the year as well as on the spot weed removal for any problematic areas.

Cllr David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene Management, said: "Weeds blight the lives of our residents because not only do they spoil the look of the district but can cause hazards. This is because they can cause a build-up of silt and soil, which in turn blocks both drains and gulleys. With heavy rain, flooding can quickly occur, which in turn causes safety issues for both pedestrians and motorists. So this programme of spraying has been designed to remove unsightly weed growth and keep the district clean, green and safe."

These latest works compliment the many other initiatives and services to keep West Lancashire a garden district.
