'Tis the season to recycle
The District Council is encouraging residents to give a gift to the
environment this year by thinking green for Christmas.
Ten easy ways to enjoy a greener Christmas:
· Buy your fruit and vegetables loose so there's less
packaging.
· Buy drinks in bigger bottles - one large bottle generates less
waste than several small ones.
· Stick with tradition and put presents in a stocking that can be
reused each year.
· For the kids' new toys and electrical gadgets buy rechargeable
batteries - for every 500 charges you'll save 499 batteries being
thrown away.
· Remember that any cardboard from bulky present packaging can be
bundled up and put out for recycling.
· Got new glad rags for Christmas? Don't forget you can put your
old clothes out for recycling in your clear textiles bag.
· Put any vegetable peelings from your Christmas dinner in your
compost bin.
· Keep any wrapping paper from Christmas morning and put it out for
recycling in your blue bag.
· We can recycle all of your Christmas cards, just pop them out for
collection in your blue bag.
· When it's time to take the tree down remember to chop it up and
place it in your green bin or green bag, and the Council's
Collection Team will take it away for recycling.
Cllr David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Refuse and Recycling,
said: "During the festive season a huge amount of waste is
generated but, by taking these few simple measures, we can all do
our bit to reduce waste and make sure that as much as possible is
recycled and put to a better greener use.
"Residents in West Lancashire already do a fantastic job with their
recycling and I am confident that everyone will continue to do
their bit to make sure we celebrate a greener Christmas this
year."
