Skelmersdale artists to exhibit in their hometown
for Open Studio
Artists in Skelmersdale are being urged to exhibit in
their local shopping centre as part of the first ever Open Studio
event.
The Concourse shopping complex is one of the many venues
that have signed up for what will be the largest visual arts event
of its kind in West Lancashire. They are opening up one of the
units in the centre for artists to showcase their work.
Already five local artists have signed up to exhibit their
work and there’s still some space left for other Skelmersdale
creators to display their work in their hometown.
The artists are:
-
Oonagh Ni Cearbhaill, a printer whose powerful pieces are
made from metal and decayed wood and reflect life growing up in
Ireland
-
Alan Minshull works in acrylic and watercolour paints and
is also an illustrator. His pieces will focus on the ocean and sea
creatures
-
Stuart Carter is a photographic artist and part-time
lecturer and his work is centred around non-urban landscapes and
the human effects they have.
-
Nata Nova is a painter and printer and likes to do bespoke
portraits and bookplates. For the exhibition she is keen to do
quick portraits
-
Selina Caulton is a recent graduate from university,
originally gaining her creative skills from Ormskirk and
Skelmersdale College. Her work focuses on surface pattern
designs
Councilor Andrew Fowler, Portfolio Holder for Community
Services, said: "This is a great opportunity for Skelmersdale
artists to exhibit within their hometown in a venue that is full of
shoppers who will be able to see their creative work. Not only will
they be able to promote themselves at the event but sell their work
and get feedback from visitors.
"In fact, since we announced that we would be holding the
Open Studio event lots of artists, craft makers and venues have
signed up to take part and I’m confident that the end result will
be a real showcase of all the talent here in West
Lancashire."
The Open Studio event runs from Saturday 29 August to
Sunday 6 September and has been organised by West Lancashire
Borough Council’s Arts Development Service and the Open Studio
Collective.
It includes artists and craft makers opening up their own
studios so that people can see what goes on behind the scenes to
create their pieces. A massive events programme has also been
planned with lots of activities for people of all ages to enjoy. A
number of venues will also be opening their doors to showcase the
work of artists.
