‘Your Community Matters’ event at Little
Digmoor
Show that your community matters to you and join in the special
initiative planned to enhance Little Digmoor.
Incorporating the ‘Beat Sweep’ events held last year it will
involve agencies including West Lancashire Borough Council,
Lancashire County Council, the police, fire and rescue and
Groundwork. They will be working together with residents, local
schools, Little Digmoor Community Association and the Safer
Stronger Communities Fund (SSCF) Neighbourhood Board to blitz the
area.
However, for this year it has been extended to last for two
weeks and there are lots of new activities planned in a bid to make
the targeted area of Little Digmoor clean, safe and green.
Throughout the fortnight there will be gardening projects, fire
safety talks, graffiti removal, sport activities, a health and
well-being afternoon, community skips, and other events to promote
cleanliness, safety, and encourage community spirit.
It starts today on Monday 6th July with an information day at
the Fold Centre, Abbeystead, between 10am and 4pm, for people to
come along and find out what’s going on in the area during the two
weeks.
The first week will culminate in a Summer Festival at Little
Digmoor School on Saturday 11th July from 12noon to 5pm, where
there will be everything from dog shows, wood carving
demonstrations and fencing to stalls and planting. The second week
will then finish with an ice rink on 18th July for all ages to
try.
It is part of the Neighbourhood Management project through the
Safer Stronger Communities cash windfall of £3.7m to make Digmoor,
Moorside and parts of Tanhouse cleaner, greener and safer over the
next year.
Councillor Ian Grant, Chair of the West Lancashire Local
Strategic Partnership, said: “I’m delighted that the partnership
has been able to support this positive two-week initiative to
enhance Little Digmoor, which will benefit the local community and
the environment.”
Margaret Highton, Chair of the SSCF Neighbourhood Board, said:
“Previous Beatsweeps have been really successful which is why we
decided to make it a two-week initiative instead of just one week
so that local residents can really work together and show that
their community matters. To make sure that it has a positive impact
on the neighbourhood I’d urge everyone to support it and join in
with the activities.”
Further ‘Your Community Matters’ events will take place in other
areas in the next few months so that other neighbourhoods reap the
benefits too.
Cllr Paul Greenall, West Lancashire Borough Council’s Portfolio
Holder for Community Safety, said: “I’m delighted that agencies are
really rallying round to help make these areas cleaner, safer and
greener place for people to enjoy. I’m sure all the events will be
great fun and will enhance the local environment.”

The West Lancashire
Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) secured the £3.7 million in 2006
to spend over four years in Digmoor, Moorside and parts of
Tanhouse. It can only be spent within the areas mentioned and can
be used to reduce crime and the fear of crime, improve the quality
of life for the most disadvantaged communities, improve the visual
appearance of the ‘neighbourhood’ to make it cleaner, safer and
greener and most importantly enable local communities to have a
strong say on what is done.
