Council lends a helping hand to keep villages looking attractive

Parish Councils are getting help from West Lancashire Borough Council on how to make their villages and countryside areas even more beautiful.

Following the signing of the Parish Charter, which pledged the Borough and Parish Councils to work more closely together, the Borough Council’s Street Scene Teams have been working with local Parish Councils to help them carry out environmental improvements.

The Team has been offering support and advice on a variety of schemes such as landscape enhancements and planting projects to help parishes keep the rural areas clean, green and attractive.

For example, in Lathom the Council helped carry out a soil survey to help the Parish Council decide what kind of plants and flowers are best suited to the local conditions. In Newburgh, the Council has worked to support the Parish Council’s entry in the best-kept village competition.

Most recent links have been with Dalton, Up Holland and Lathom about the planting of spring bulbs and general grounds maintenance advice.

In a number of other areas the Council’s Street Scene Teams have been sharing information about service standards and the frequency of work they carry out, as well as responding to specific problems and issues. The Council’s horticultural experts have also given advice on the purchase of spring bulbs, the best places for planting flowers, shrubs and trees.

Councillor Paul Greenall, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, said: "We are responsible for ensuring the maintenance of the landscaped areas within the Borough which includes flowerbeds, shrub bed areas, hanging baskets and town parks and we are proud that West Lancashire is renowned for its green beauty. Parish Councils play a huge role in helping us to maintain our excellent reputation and ensuring that their villages remain attractive. We’re delighted that we are working with them to support their environmental improvements and keeping West Lancashire clean, green and attractive."
