Olympic flag raising moment at Coronation
Park
West Lancashire joined hundreds of towns and cities across the
UK to fly the flag for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
As the Beijing Olympic Games drew to a close on Sunday (24
August) the flag was handed over to London, the city that is to
host the next event in four years time.
To celebrate this historic moment, West Lancashire District
Council’s Chairman Cllr Cyril Ainscough raised the unique flag at
Ormskirk’s Coronation Park.
Chairman Cllr Ainscough said: "This year’s Olympic games have
been brilliant and it’s exciting to know that such a prestigious
event will be held in our country next time round, which is why we
wanted to join in the celebrations. It was such a poignant moment
raising the flag in the park, knowing that hundreds of other towns
and cities were doing it at the same time. It shows such a united
front. I’m delighted that lots of our residents turned up to watch
the event too."
Flags were delivered to more than 500 locations including the
armed forces, embassies around the world and city and town halls to
raise at landmark areas.
The Chairman and his lady raised the flag in Coronation Park,
off Park Road, Ormskirk, on Sunday 24 August at 2.30pm - the same
time as the rest of the country.
