Schools join in
Paralympics flag handover
Pupils from West Lancashire will be joining in the celebrations
across the UK to fly the Paralympics flag for the London 2012
Olympic Games.
Today (Wednesday 17 September) the Council’s Sports Development
Team have organised a number of activities at two schools for
children with learning disabilities to mark the historic
moment.
As the Major of Beijing hands over the Paralympics flag to the
Mayor of London, West Lancashire Community High School and
Kingsbury School in Skelmersdale will be celebrating too with
sports events and the raising of the flag.
During the day there will be fitness sessions, judo, boccia and
goal ball. Sports champions will also be making an appearance
too.
Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community
Services, said: "This year’s Olympic games and the Paralympics have
been fantastic to watch and it’s great to know that such a
prestigious event will be held in our country in four years time,
which is why we want to mark the occasion with our own sporting
event and flag handover. It will make us proud to fly the flag with
other towns and cities to hail the forthcoming London 2012 Olympic
Games."

In preparation for the Olympics coming to London, the Council’s
External Overview and Scrutiny Committee has just started a project
review of the Olympics 2012 securing a lasting legacy in West
Lancashire, which will take into account how it will benefit the
area and affect the community.
