Give your views to help preserve our heritage

How can we best preserve the historic environment of West Lancashire? Now is your chance to tell us.

Residents and interested organisations and groups are being asked for their comments on the Borough Council’s draft West Lancashire Heritage Strategy, which is currently out for public consultation until Friday 26 June.

West Lancashire has a wealth of historic buildings and places that add to the distinctive character and appearance of the local environment. The Council therefore wants to ensure that the best architectural and historic buildings and areas are protected and enhanced.

We want everyone to take pride in their local area, which is why it is important that people give their views on the draft proposals which set out how the Council intends to carry on preserving West Lancashire’s heritage.

Councillor Martin Forshaw, Portfolio Holder for Planning, said: "Our historic environment is a fragile resource and one which is an irreplaceable and unique record of our heritage. The preservation of our built heritage is important not only as it provides a link with the past, but because the buildings themselves enhance the appearance of most of our towns and villages, giving a sense of local pride and providing a valuable leisure and recreation resource. That’s why it’s so important that we continue to preserve our heritage.

"We first launched our Heritage Strategy in 2003 and we want to make sure that it remains up to date and relevant so we agreed to review it every five years. The new draft looks at how we might better achieve our aims in the future to look after our heritage, promote understanding and enjoyment of our heritage and retain it. Before we produce the final document we’d really like views from interested individuals and groups - so make sure you give us your comments."

The document can be viewed and downloaded from our heritage pages and comments can be submitted via the online form. Paper copies are also available on request by contacting the Heritage and Environment Section on 01695 585167 or emailing ian.bond@westlancs.gov.uk. The deadline is 5.00pm Friday 26 June.
