Burscough town centre redevelopment
From its early development stages in 2004, this £11.5 million
physical regeneration project (part funded by the Northwest
Regional Development Agency, via the West Lancashire Strategic
Partnership’s ‘Investing in Business’ Programme) has revitalised
Burscough and strengthened the local economy by implementing a
series of environmental and visual improvements to the town
centre.
The work has given
Burscough back its sense of identity, making residents proud
of their town and creating a place where people want to shop and
spend their leisure time.
On top of the visual improvements there has
also been significant job creation with a total of 135.9
jobs already created to date.
The Burscough
project has also successfully avoided the potential
negative impacts that a new food superstore can create for
traditional town centres, by drawing people from the new Tesco
development into the town centre itself.
The project has provided valuable
project development and management experience for our Regeneration
team and we are already working with the
private sector to develop similar improvement schemes in other
towns and villages across the district.
The
project has recently been awarded a "Commendation" from the Royal
Town Planning Institute. Commendations are presented to schemes /
projects / initiatives that are exemplars of good practice which
should be disseminated across the North West.
The project is also going to be given an award in the
Landscape Institute Awards
2008 ( design under 1 ha category). Awards are made in
one of three categories: winner, highly commended and commended and
the result will be announced in London on 20
November.
