Public realm and urban design
improvements in Burscough
The list of work for the town centre was
finalised following public consultation events. The project was
also developed in close liaison with Burscough Parish Council and
local Ward Councillors.
The works included:
- Complete footway re-construction, with use of
heritage style paviers and resin bonded aggregate
- Restoration of railings/cobbled
forecourts
- Replacement heritage style lighting columns
throughout the town centre
- Restoration/cleaning of the railway bridge
and canal bridge parapets, (each of which form prominent
visual landmarks into the main town centre)
- Provision of an avenue of street trees on one
side of the main highway, to add green to the centre and
create a physical barrier between pedestrians and the busy
road
- Upgraded soft landscaping
- Provision of new and replacement street
furniture
- The creation of a new public square for the
town
- The illumination of the Grade II* listed St
John The Baptist Church
- Disabled access ramps to the local post
office and pharmacy
- Various works of public art, emphasising
Burscough’s distinct history and traditions
In addition to the public realm improvements, a scheme of
shopfront grants for the town centre was setup using existing
grant funding, supplemented by funds from the Burscough town centre
project.
The shopfront scheme assisted six businesses
to refurbish their premises, to an agreed standard set out in the
Burscough town centre design guide. The design guide was produced
specifically for the project to ensure shopfront improvements tied
in with the overall public realm design.
