Plans to transform Skelmersdale town centre are moving forward which will breathe a new lease of life into the area by bringing significant investment and new jobs, providing multiple benefits for the entire community.
St. Modwen has now been granted planning consent for a scheme in the town centre which focuses on the currently underdeveloped area of the land between the West Lancashire College and the existing town centre, by bringing essential retail and leisure opportunities.
This comes on top of the new West Lancashire College, Youth Zone and transformation of the Firbeck Estate with investment in the existing housing to be complemented by the potential development of 3 further housing sites which are to be marketed in the coming months.
The latest milestone in the £10m regeneration project came as Reel Cinemas signed a deal to bring a modern multi-screen cinema to the planned development. This news signals long term commitment to the town which will bring in excess of 500 jobs and 100,000 sq ft of retail, leisure and entertainment space to Skelmersdale, introducing a new night time economy. It is hoped that these developments will become the catalyst for further investment and improvements to the town.
In addition there will be extensive improvements to the public realm as part of the proposals, including a new high street between the college and the existing town centre and public art, as well as enhancements to the public areas outside the library and Nye Bevan Leisure Centre.
Skelmersdale town centre regeneration is being progressed by a partnership between the Borough Council, Homes and Communities Agency and developer St. Modwen, and supported by Lancashire County Council.
