We invited local residents and sports centre users to give their views on the future of Skelmersdale Sports Centre. This consultation ended on 6 July 2012.
Having taken account of these results and investigations into alternative facilities, we made the decision to close and demolish Skelmersdale Sports Centre in the autumn as it was uneconomic to continue to repair and operate. The Council was told there was available space for users at other locations in Skelmersdale.
The roof of the sports centre, which is made from asbestos cement sheets, has serious defects and leaks on a regular basis. A technical assessment has shown it can no longer be repaired satisfactorily and that a new roof is needed if the building is to be maintained. In addition, repairs and improvements are required to the heating system, showers and lighting. A total of around £235,000 would need to be spent to keep the centre open. However, even with these works, the building would still remain in a less than satisfactory appearance and condition.
We received a total of 164 individual questionnaires (25 online, 139 hard copy).
