Your right to vote
Local residents have received important voter registration information about the annual canvass.
Households in West Lancashire will have received a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct. Those who have yet to respond will soon receive a reminder form.
This is part of West Lancashire Borough Council’s annual voter registration canvass. The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.
The annual canvass is an opportunity for people to easily check whether they’re registered. It’s essential for a healthy democracy that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to, and for those who need to, registering is now easier than ever with the online system of registration.
If you have changed address in the last year, you may need to register at your new address, so please check the form as soon as it arrives. If households do not respond to the form, further reminder letters will be issued, followed by a personal visit, so please do respond as soon as you can.
With Lancashire County Council elections taking place in May 2017, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure they will be able to take part.
Being on the electoral roll also impacts on your credit score as it provides valuable proof of your identity and address to lenders. If you are not registered it can cause delays when you apply for credit, and some organisations may turn you down if they feel they cannot confirm who you are or where you live.
Kim Webber, Electoral Registration Officer at West Lancashire Borough Council, said:
“Anyone that wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at the elections next year, simply check the form when it arrives and return it as promptly as possible. If you’re not currently registered, we’ll send you information explaining how to do this or you can just go online to apply to register (external link).
"It’s particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered."
