Households in West Lancashire who haven’t responded to an electoral enquiry form, will soon receive a visit to check whether information on the Electoral Register for that address is correct.
This marks the final phase of West Lancashire Borough Council’s annual voter registration canvass. The aim is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not yet registered so that they can be invited to do so.
The Council’s canvass officers will be working across the borough through September and October, calling at households who have not responded to the form this year. If no one is at home, they will leave a calling card encouraging residents to respond, before making two further visits to the property. Households who responded to the form that was sent to them in July will not need a visit.
The annual canvass is an opportunity for people to check whether they’re registered.
It’s important for a healthy democracy that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to, and for those who need to register it is now easier than ever with the online system of registration.
West Lancashire Borough Council elections are to take place on Thursday 3 May 2018 and this is an opportunity for residents to make sure they will be able to take part.
Being on the electoral register can also impact on your credit score. If you are not registered it can cause delays when you apply for credit, and some organisations may turn you down if they feel they cannot confirm who you are or where you live.
Kim Webber, Electoral Registration Officer at West Lancashire Borough Council, said: “Anyone who wants to vote must be registered. If your name is not listed on the form, it means you are not registered. Complete the form with the canvass officer or return one previously sent to you and then we’ll send you information explaining how to register. Alternatively, once you return the form, you can visit Register to vote (external link) or Register to vote and register to vote online."
"It’s particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered."
