Council is reminding people about government introduction of Universal Credit full service

The Borough Council is reminding people that from 13 December 2017 Universal Credit (UC) full service is being introduced by the government for all people in West Lancashire with a Liverpool or Wigan postcode when they make a new claim for benefits.

Universal Credit is now the main benefit for most working age claimants. It replaces the six benefits listed below and puts them into one single monthly payment:

  • Income based job seekers allowance
  • Income related employment support allowance
  • Income support
  • Child tax credit
  • Working tax credit
  • Housing benefit

This means if you wish to make a new claim for benefits you will need to claim UC and your claim must be made online.

More information is available on Universal Credit (external link), or Universal Credit.

Councillor Jenny Forshaw, portfolio holder, said: "We want to remind people that from 13 December the government is introducing Universal Credit for all people in West Lancashire with a Liverpool or Wigan postcode when they make a new claim for benefits."

It's important to remember that if you do make a claim for UC this will include a payment for your rent costs. UC claimants do not receive housing benefit so it's really important that you don’t delay making a new claim.

Pensioners and people living in supported exempt accommodation should continue to claim housing benefit from West Lancashire Borough Council to cover rent payments.

People already claiming UC prior to 13 December should be moved to the full service within three months. You will be advised by Universal Credit how this will happen nearer the time.
