Changes are in the pipeline for residents in West Lancashire who use the Council’s garden waste collection service. From 5 June 2017, a charge will be introduced for the collection of garden waste and residents will be able to choose if they wish to use the service. It will cost £30 per year for one green bin to be emptied. Householders will also be able to have additional green bins emptied at a cost of £25 for each additional bin. Councillor Kevin Wilkie, portfolio holder for Street Scene Services, said: “We are advising residents now that changes are on the way, so that they can take time to decide whether they wish to use the Council’s service. “The Council took the difficult decision to introduce charges for garden waste collections due to the challenging financial position it faces, primarily because of reductions in government grants. Many other Councils have introduced similar charges.” In April, the Council will deliver a leaflet to every household in the borough giving information about how to sign up and pay, and further details of the service. Information is also provided on the website at garden waste. Residents will be able to sign up and pay from 19 April 2017 if they want the Council to collect their garden waste. The free garden waste collection service will finish on 2 June, and the new service will start on 5 June 2017. Residents will need to sign up and pay before 15 May 2017 to ensure there is no interruption to collections from their home. For residents who sign up and pay, there will be no change to collection days and the Council will continue to empty green bins every two weeks. Residents who don’t use the service will be able to dispose of garden waste at the household waste recycling centres, or compost it.
