We are helping you to get on your bike at new cycle hire docking station in Ormskirk
If you fancy using pedal power to make your way round Ormskirk then make sure you take advantage of the new cycle hire station in the town.
VISIT Sefton and West Lancashire has installed West Lancashire’s sixth automated cycle hire point at Edge Hill University.
The cycle hire station was officially launched at a special event on Wednesday 2 April at the University and was attended by representatives from Edge Hill, VISIT Sefton and West Lancashire and Hourbike who operate the cycle hire scheme.
People attending were able to get advice on a range of cycling matters including how to use the cycle hire points and information on cycle routes across Sefton and West Lancashire. Hourbike also provided a Dr Bike service in addition to providing advice on bike safety and maintenance. ICycle were also in attendance providing a range of cycling activities along with Lancashire Police who provided bike marking security. Additionally, university students and staff took part in a one-hour guided cycle tour taking in parts of Ormskirk and Aughton.
The hire docking station has been provided in conjunction with VISIT Sefton and West Lancs and Edge Hill University.
Bill Hancox, Edge Hill University Director of Facilities Management, stated, “We are delighted to be able to participate in this scheme, which not only provides a sustainable travel option for our students and staff to get to and from the University, but also the opportunity to get some exercise and visit some of the beautiful locations West Lancashire has to offer.”
The station is situated outside the University’s Business School and is available for anyone to use.
Bikes can be taken from one docking station and deposited at any other in West Lancashire, providing there is space. The other stations are at Park Pool in Ormskirk, Burscough Leisure Centre, Burscough Wharf, The Ship Inn at Lathom and Riverside Holiday Park in Banks.
West Lancashire Borough Councillor Martin Forshaw, a member of the VISIT board, said: “I am really pleased that another cycle hire station has been opened in West Lancashire. These facilities link with attractions and transport interchanges and we hope residents and visitors will take advantage of the facilities and visit the many fabulous attractions the borough has to offer.”
Councillor John Fairclough, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Transportation, said: “These Cycle Hire Docking stations have helped encourage people to use pedal power to explore their local area, and I am sure this latest one will be very popular.”
The bikes can be hired from as little as £1 per hour (a minimum charge applies). All you need to hire a bike is a mobile phone and a credit or debit card.
Helmets are not provided and people should bring their own if they want one. There is no legal requirement to wear a helmet when riding a bike on a public highway or footpath. However cyclists are strongly recommended to do so.
More information on cycle hire can be found at the VISIT Sefton and West Lancs website (external link) along with themed cycle route maps which can be downloaded and information on great days out in the area.
