Free family activities
There are lots of exciting free activities in West Lancashire parks in May for all the family to enjoy, from early morning birdsong to the fun-packed Ormskirk Medieval weekend.
Bird lovers can enjoy nature's daily miracle – the dawn chorus – on International Dawn Chorus Day on Sunday 3 May. This short walk around Coronation Park, Ormskirk starts at 6am from the bowling pavilion, and West Lancashire Borough Council Rangers will even provide tea and toast! Places are limited on the Dawn Chorus walk so please call 01695 570258 or email firstname.lastname@example.org in advance to book your place.
Keen walkers can enjoy the eight-mile Beacon Canal Loop walk starting from the Beacon Country Park Ranger Station at 10am on Bank Holiday Monday on 4 May, which takes in many local sights. Another long walk is the 11-mile trip through Burscough Wetlands which starts from Platts Lane at 10am on Bank Holiday Monday 25 May.
Volunteers can help the Rangers do a clean-up in the Tawd Valley area on Saturday 9 May. Meet at Skelmersdale Library at 10am to join in.
If you have ever wondered what Coronation Park in Ormskirk may have looked like 1,000 years ago then come along to the Ormskirk Medieval Weekend on Saturday 16 May and Sunday 17 May. Between 11am and 4pm on both days visitors can experience the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of the past as Historia Normannis take them on a journey through time. The park will be alive with interactive displays, including medieval crafts and archery demonstrations. Other attractions include face painting, themed stalls and story-telling. A similar event held last year was hugely successful with about 4,000 people attending over the weekend.
Come to Coronation Park, Ormskirk, on Saturday 30 May at 2pm and you can join in the open bowls session. All the family, from kids to grandparents, can play crown green bowls. It's a great sport for making new friends so don’t miss this great chance to try it out. There is no need to book in advance, just turn up.
All children under 16 require adult supervision at all of these events. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and ground conditions when attending these activities.
