Home Care Link offers a vital service

A vital service is being offered by West Lancashire Borough Council to help keep vulnerable people safe in their own homes.

Home Care Link provides a personal alarm service to 7,000 clients, which is connected to a monitoring centre that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The service aims to promote independence so they can stay in their own homes. People who join Home Care Link are given a call button which can be worn either around their necks or on their wrists.

The call button is linked to our monitoring centre through the client’s telephone landline. When the alarm is raised our highly-skilled operators respond to get people the help they need.

People who use Home Care Link are given peace of mind and the service also gives comfort to families as they know someone can help their vulnerable relatives in an emergency if they are not available.

West Lancashire resident David Griffin has used the service for a number of years.

He said: “Home Care Link is a brilliant service. The staff are always pleasant and very efficient. They make you feel more like a friend than a client.

“I am totally dependent and sometimes my carers are not available. When that happens it is comforting for me to know that Home Care Link is on hand in case of emergencies.”

Clients have to pay a small fee for the service, but different payment options are available. There is usually a charge for installing the Life Line base unit and for providing the call button. But people living in West Lancashire who take up the service before 31 January will get the installation charge free which is normally £22.00.

Councillor Val Hopley, portfolio holder for Landlord Services, said: “Home Care Link staff do a fantastic job of providing vital services to people, some of whom are very vulnerable.

“Clients feel very re-assured knowing that this service can help them if they need support and they really are in expert hands. Our service is founded on more than 25 years experience of looking after people who may be at risk in their own homes.”

Home Care Link is available to people of all ages, not just the elderly. A growing number of younger people with disabilities are using the service. People who have just been discharged from hospital and are feeling vulnerable can also use the service to help them feel more secure at home.
