Final call to community groups to take over Tanfields Meeting Rooms

A final call is being issued to community groups wanting to take over the running of Tanfields Meeting Rooms in New Church Farm, Old Skelmersdale.

The previous  community organisation which used the building left in October, and West Lancashire Borough Council has been advertising that the building is available to let.

There has been no interest so far and if no one comes forward then the building is likely to be demolished. The building has been subject to vandalism and requires ongoing work to ensure that it is safe and secure. The Council is currently considering the option to demolish the building and will be seeking planning permission to undertake this work unless a suitable and sustainable tenant can be found.

Councillor David Sudworth, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “Tanfields Meeting Room was one of the first community facilities built during the New Town development and it would be a shame if it had to be demolished.

"However, it has been vandalised a number of times over the years and is not in the best condition. It has historically been difficult to lease out, partly due to the fact that the town has a large number of community buildings and we have to consider demolition as a last resort.

“If there is any group out there wanting to take over the running of the building, the time to act is now."

If your group is interested in taking over the building please contact the Council’s estates team on 01695 712612 or email stuart.thorn@westlancs.gov.uk.
