Next step for West Lancashire Borough Councils political management structure in 2014/15
The new political management structure for West Lancashire Borough Council will be decided at Annual Council on Wednesday 11 June 2014.
At the elections on 22 May, 19 seats on the Council were contested.
The political balance on the Council is now:
The Conservative Group on the Council has elected Councillor Adrian Owens as its Leader and Councillor David Westley as Conservative Deputy Leader. The Labour Group on the Council is holding elections for its positions of Leader and Deputy Leader on Monday 2 June 2014. Councillor Roger Bell is the current Labour Leader and Councillor Terry Aldridge is the current Labour Deputy Leader.
As the Council currently has a Conservative Mayor in Councillor Iain Ashcroft, the Conservatives will have the casting vote at Annual Council on Wednesday 11 June.
At that meeting it is anticipated that, through the use of the Mayor’s casting vote, a new Conservative Mayor will be elected. It is then expected that the Conservative Leader would be elected Leader of the Council and that he will appoint a Conservative Cabinet. Committee Chairmen would also be appointed using the Mayor’s casting vote at the Annual Meeting. The Committees will be politically balanced and therefore decisions will be dependent on the casting vote of each of the Chairmen.
