West Lancs residents seeking to step onto the housing ladder may be eligible to buy a brand new shared ownership apartment.
The arrangement has been negotiated by West Lancashire Borough Council.
Six two bed-roomed apartments are available on Rowland Homes popular development at Becconsall Gardens in Hesketh Bank. The apartments have been acquired by Helena Partnerships, the largest social landlord in St Helens, Merseyside, with almost 13,000 homes.
Councillor Adrian Owens, portfolio holder for Housing (Finance), Regeneration and Estates, said: “The Council appreciates that many people have difficulty in affording a home in our area. We are committed to tackling this problem and part of our approach involves working with housing developers and social landlords like Helena Partnerships to ensure that some of the newly built homes are provided as affordable housing.”
Councillor Val Hopley, portfolio holder for landlord services, said: “Shared ownership is just one of the approaches the Council uses to try and provide much needed affordable housing in the Borough. This latest release of affordable housing provides an opportunity for eligible households to buy their home in affordable stages. They can buy an initial share of up to 75% of the home using a traditional mortgage and then will pay rent to Helena Partnerships on the portion of the home’s value they don’t yet own.”
This scheme gives priority, subject to other scheme eligibility criteria being satisfied, to households who have a local connection to Hesketh Bank. This approach contributes to the building of sustainable communities.
