West Lancashire Borough Council tenants can be sure their homes are safe as the authority has achieved a 100% servicing rate on its homes with gas appliances.
The Council is required to check each of its properties and their appliances every 12 months. This is to ensure gas fittings are maintained in a safe condition.
The Council has a target of having all homes with a valid safety certificate. But with more than 5,500 homes to inspect and sometimes tenants not being available there always seemed to be a few that were out of date.
Staff work all year round as part of a rolling programme of works. Thanks to the help of our tenants and Heat 2000, the contractor which carries out annual gas safety checks for the Council as well as providing its heating breakdown service, each property has now been completed on schedule.
All services are carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer from Heat 2000. An engineer will also check each appliance and flue before a new tenant moves into the property. Each service will be recorded and a copy of the safety certificate provided to tenants.
Councillor Jennifer Patterson, portfolio holder for Housing, said: “We want to make sure everyone who rents a home from us is safe and we take our responsibilities to tenants incredibly seriously. Our staff and contractors work incredibly hard to ensure all the work is completed and this achievement is testament to that.
“I’d like to thank the tenants for helping us by allowing us access to their homes to carry out all the necessary work in time, and Heat 2000 staff for their work in helping us achieve this target.”
The Council works with tenants to make sure appointments are completed on time. However it is sometimes necessary to take action against those who refuse to give contractors access to their properties. including eviction as a final sanction.
