Enjoy the great outdoors in West Lancashire

The summer may be nearly over but autumn is a great time to visit parks and countryside areas to see the wonderful seasonal colours in the local landscape.

West Lancashire Borough Council has a wonderful array of sites across the borough for everyone to enjoy – with two of our parks, Coronation Park, Ormskirk, and Beacon Country Park, Up Holland, having the nationally recognised prestigious Green Flag Award.

Other great places to visit include Fairy Glen, Appley Bridge; Hunters Hill, Hilldale, Richmond Park, Burscough; Ruff Wood, Ormskirk; and Tawd Valley Park, Skelmersdale.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “West Lancashire has a lot of beautiful scenery and autumn is a great time to see that as the landscape begins to change with the new season. So give yourself and the family an enjoyable day out by planning a visit to one of our sites, and take in one or more of our great parks events as well.”

There are some great events planned for September in the parks.

On Saturday 5 September Coronation Park in Ormskirk hosts Beautiful Berries. You can come and collect berries in the park with the Park Ranger and foraging expert David Winnard of Discover the Wild. We will be showing you how to make cordials and jellies in the park. An event not to miss!

People of all ages can enjoy the Family Friendly foraging event at Beacon Country Park on Sunday 6 September, starting at 10am. Volunteers can help with the Chequer Lane clean up on Saturday 12 September, from 10am to 3pm. Then on 19 September the Hunters Hill Fungi walk takes place at 2pm.

Visit events for more details of events in the borough. For more information about volunteering opportunities with the Ranger Service please contact 01695 622794. The Council works closely with the Friends of Coronation Park and other Friends’ groups across the Borough on exciting schemes.  These Friends’ Groups are always looking for new members, so if you are interested please contact Park Ranger Jess Britch on 01695 570258 for more details.
