Visitors to the West Lancashire Borough Council offices in Derby Street, Ormskirk, are advised that the Wigan Road/Abbotsford entrance to the Derby Street car park is closed Monday to Friday for a trial period due to safety concerns.
This action is in response to a significant increase in the use of the Derby Street car park as a “rat run” between Derby Street and Wigan Road.
Some vehicles are driven through the car park at excessive speeds, posing a serious danger to members of the public and council staff.
After taking these issues into account the Council decided to close the Wigan Road/Abbotsford entrance to vehicles for an initial three-month trial period from Monday 14 March. As a result of the closure, the only vehicular access to the Council offices for members of the public and staff from Monday to Friday is now via the Derby Street entrance.
During this trial period, the Abbotsford entrance to the Derby Street car park will remain open as usual on Saturdays when the main West Lancashire Borough Council offices are closed.
Parking is free in the Derby Street car park at anytime on Saturday for up to four hours, but drivers must obtain a free ticket in advance from the pay and display machine, which must then be appropriately displayed in their vehicle.
Unless the trial period identifies any major operational issues arising from the closure of the Abbottsford entrance, the Council intends to close the entrance on a permanent basis on weekdays. The future access arrangements onto the site on Saturdays will be reviewed at the same time.
