Mayor of West Lancashire Councillor Nikki Hennessy visited a group that she started when she worked for the Borough Council.
Councillor Hennessy was the Council’s GP Referral Officer for eight years and during this time she started the Nifty Fifties Clubs at Burscough Sports Centre and Banks Leisure Centre.
Patients from the Council’s Life Matters GP Referral Scheme, which was also developed by Councillor Hennessy, could join and exercise in a light hearted, social manner. Councillor Hennessy encouraged the groups to become independent clubs and they have now both been running for over 12 years.
In one of her last duties as Mayor Councillor Hennessy paid a visit to the Nifty Fifties Club at Burscough Sports Centre in her civic role.
The group has grown over the years and an array of activities are offered to its members, including badminton, exercise circuits, fusion classes, and use of the sport’s centre’s fitness suite.
Councillor Hennessy said: “I am so pleased that the Nifty Fifties Clubs are still going and I was delighted to meet the people who use the group at Burscough now. The members really enjoy the groups, which provide a great opportunity for them to have regular exercise as well as meeting other people.”
Angela Wilson, group member, said: “The Mayor was absolutely fabulous, really lovely and a great socialiser with the group. I am really grateful to her for setting up the group and the people who run them now are amazing as they don’t get paid for what they do. As well as being great for exercise, the social networking and wellbeing that comes out of the group is amazing.”
The Nifty Fifties Club at Burscough Sports Centre meets every Tuesday and Thursday between 10am and midday. For more information on the group please call Angela on 07743 475888. A Nifty Fifties Club takes place at Banks Leisure Centre on Wednesday mornings from 10am-midday. The club at Banks Leisure Centre also has an art class which takes place on Wednesday afternoons between 1pm and 3pm. For more details please call the centre 01704 212970.
West Lancashire Borough Council recently adopted its Council Plan for 2016-18 and the Nifty Fifties Club fits in with one of the Council’s top priorities, which is to improve the health and wellbeing of local communities. For more information on leisure services please visit leisure and recreation.
