Please help with new plaques for Ormskirk War Memorial
A special tribute is being planned to Ormskirk people who lost their lives serving their country in the two world wars and West Lancashire Borough Council wants your help with this.
Ormskirk War Memorial was moved from outside the former Comrades Club to Coronation Park in 2012. As part of these works the Council agreed to engrave the names from printed 1914-18 and 1939-1945 Rolls of Honour which relate to the memorial, onto new stone plaques erected alongside the memorial.
The Council understands that it is very important for communities to properly remember the fallen servicemen and women who have given their lives.
To help with this the Council has done extensive research to ensure the names being taken from the existing Rolls of Honour are correct. This research has highlighted a large number of potential errors, including spelling mistakes, which may have occurred when the rolls were originally drafted.
We are therefore asking for your assistance as we consult with the wider community to help us see if our findings are correct before we start work on the plaques next year.
It is important to stress that the Council is only seeking information about the names on the existing rolls of honour as these are the ones that relate to the Ormskirk Comrades Memorial. Our approach will be only to correct potential errors which are corroborated by clear evidence. Where no such evidence exists we will use the names on the existing rolls. We are not looking for new names in addition to those people already on the rolls of honour for these new tributes.
To see copies of 1914-18 and 1939-45 Rolls of Honour please visit rolls of honour.
Please send any comments or evidence on the names included on the Rolls of Honour in writing to Ian Bond, Heritage and Environment Manager, at West Lancashire Borough Council, 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk L39 2DF. Or you can email email@example.com. This public consultation will run from Monday 23 November 2015 until Friday 8 January 2016.
Councillor Yvonne Gagen, whose Cabinet portfolio responsibilities include the Ormskirk War Memorial, said: “As a local authority we understand the importance of war memorials to our communities. This is a really sensitive issue but it is essential the names we put on these new stone plaques are correct, so I appeal to anyone with any information who can help us to contact us as soon as possible.”
