Enjoy Halloween and plenty of other October parks events

From Halloween screams to seasonal autumn crafts, October is a great month for fun park events in West Lancashire.

Autumn is always a great time of year to visit local parks to see the wonderful array of seasonal colours. You can also enjoy some fantastic free events organised by the West Lancashire Borough Council Parks and Countryside Ranger Service with a scary Halloween night highlighting the exciting month.

On Monday 2 October you can stride out with the Rangers on a six-mile Burscough Loop Walk, starting from the entrance of Richmond Park at 10am. No booking is required, simply turn up and be ready to set off on time.

On Wednesday 4 October the latest Orchard Restoration Day takes place at Beacon Country Park. The event is part of a series of events to restore the Beacon Park Orchard and it is an excellent opportunity to find out more about orchards and how to look after fruit trees. This event starts at 10am and to book places please call 01695 622794.

Children aged between 5 and 12 can discover the wonderful colours at this time of year with seasonal crafts and activities to get them into the autumnal spirit at the Junior Rangers Autumn Watch events. These take place at Richmond Park, Burscough, on Saturday 14 October and Stanley Coronation Park, Skelmersdale on Sunday 15 October, starting at 2pm. For more information, and to book places, please contact Anne Faulkner, Park Ranger, on 01695 570258. Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult.

Just before Halloween people can enjoy carving scary pumpkins at Stanley Coronation Park, Skelmersdale on Saturday 28 October at 10am and Richmond Park, Burscough at 2pm on the same day. Another pumpkin carving session is planned at Coronation Park, Ormskirk at 2pm on Sunday 29 October. Booking is essential for the pumpkin carving. To reserve your place, please call 01695 570258 or 01695 622794.

The pumpkins produced at the carving sessions will then be dotted around Coronation Park, Ormskirk, on Halloween night. The best three pumpkins will be given a prize at the fantastic free Halloween event on Tuesday 31 October, when there will be plenty of scary goings on between 6pm and 8pm including scary walks through the woods with vampires, witches and ghosts. Live Halloween music will also be provided by The Doctors.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “Come along to Coronation Park, Ormskirk for an evening of fantastic frights and stupendous screams on Halloween night. There are plenty of other great free events in our parks this month, so make sure you don’t miss all the fun.”

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all these events, except for the Junior Rangers events which have separate arrangements. Please ensure you wear suitable footwear and clothing for the weather, ground conditions and the planned activity. For more information on local parks please visit parks and countryside.
