Adding a name to a war memorial

West Lancashire Borough Council is asking for information that could help us in adding a new name to Ormskirk War Memorial in Coronation Park.

Relevant information regarding the application

Sydney Turner was born on the 30 June 1915 and lived his early life at Square Lane, Burscough.  His mother, Ruth, died in 1928 and his father, David, in 1936. In later life, possibly after his parents had died, he lived with his sister Hilda in Ormskirk.

Sydney enlisted in May 1940 into the Kings Own Territorial Army (service number 3715213) and was in active service in North Africa (Tunisia).  His recorded address, at this time, was Ravenscroft Avenue, Ormskirk.

His death was confirmed as being on the 28 November 1942.  Sydney is not recorded as having any known dependents and his sister, Hilda Allen, is identified as being his next of kin.

Sydney Turner is not currently commemorated on any war memorial locally.

It is important to stress that our main aim is to seek confirmation that the information provided on Private Sydney Turner is correct, and in particular, whether he has any known relatives still living in the Ormskirk and Burscough area.

Consultation on adding Sydney Turner to Ormskirk War Memorial will remain open until Thursday 2 March 2017. Any representation or comments received through the consultation exercise will be taken into account prior to the Council making a final decision.

Please send any comments or evidence in writing to West Lancashire Borough Council, 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk L39 2DF
