What the Heritage and Environment team does
- Help preserve the District's built and cultural heritage.
- Give advice to owners of historic properties on the design of
alterations/extensions, techniques of building repair and the
appropriate materials to use to preserve their special
character.
- Monitor the condition of all the District's listed buildings
and produces and updates a 'Building at Risk' (BAR) register to
highlight those historic buildings which are neglected or in danger
from disuse and decay.
- Work with owners and outside bodies to try and solve the issues
relating to the buildings on the BAR register.
- Provide specialist advice on planning applications affecting
historic buildings/conservation areas and Listed Building Consent
Applications.
- Organise the West Lancashire Conservation Areas Advisory Panel
(CAAP), which sits once a month to consider applications relating
to heritage matters. Their views feed back into the development
control process.
- Carry out a program of conservation area appraisals and produce
proposals, in consultation with residents, to preserve and enhance
the character and appearance of these areas.
- Undertake improvement works and grant schemes to enhance the
character and appearance of conservation areas.
- Put bids together for funding from outside bodies for the
preservation and enhancement of the District's heritage.
- Produce guidance information (leaflets, advice notes etc) to
help the public understand issues relating to the historic
environment and to make informed choices.
- Produce strategy documents, which help preserve the District's
built heritage.
- Represent the Council in County wide forums which seek to
preserve our heritage and work in partnership with outside bodies
to promote conservation i.e. English Heritage, SPAB.
