National and regional guidance

The Local Plan guides development in the local area and must be consistent with wider policies.

National Planning Policy

Central government planning policy is set out primarily in the National Planning Policy Framework. For more details, or to view or download this document, visit the Communities and Local Government website (external link).

Regional Plans

The Regional Spatial Strategy for the North West (RSS) was adopted in September 2008.  This plan, covering the whole of North West England, contained general planning policies for the area and set the housing requirements for West Lancashire. The RSS was revoked in spring 2013. This means it no longer forms part of the development plan and no longer has any legal weight.
