Street naming and
numbering
We deal with the naming and numbering of streets and roads
in West Lancashire.
How to propose street names
Developers should normally forward proposals for new street
names in writing to the council once their development has received
planning approval.
When considering street or road names, try to choose something
of a local geographical or historical nature. Things to avoid
include separate promotional names, duplicating an
existing road name and naming roads after individuals.
Send the proposed names with two copies of a site plan
to:
Planning, West Lancashire District Council, PO Box 16, 52 Derby
Street, Ormskirk L39 2DF. (The site plans are used to
indicate the correct postal numbering and location of street name
plates).
A guide to street naming and numbering is
available to download, as well as an application form.
The approval process
Once we have received the proposals we consult with the Royal
Mail, the council's ward members, portfolio holder and, where
applicable, the parish council. We allow a period of two
weeks for any comments and/or objections to be made.
Should the proposed names meet with approval at the end of the
consultation stage we will then write to inform the developer of
the chosen name/s and notify all the appropriate official
authorities of any new postal addresses which have been
allocated.
