In recent
years we've seen some of the worst weather West
Lancashire has experienced in decades. As well as reviewing
and improving our winter weather plans, we are
encouraging local residents and businesses to be prepared
for severe weather too:
Before winter:
- Have your heating system checked by a qualified heating
engineer
- Stock up early on salt from your local DIY shop
- Invest in a good, strong snow shovel
- Have some food stocks
- Talk to family and friends about childcare plans
- Review your travel plans
- Get a winter health check on your car
During severe weather:
- Check on elderly or disabled neighbours
- Keep up-to-date with disruptions to services on our
severe
weather update page and follow us on Twitter
- Stay warm - heat your main living room to around 18-21°C
(64-70°F) and the rest of the house to at least 16°C (61°F). Close
curtains at night to help keep in heat and reduce energy bills
- Avoid using your car unless really necessary
- Help by clearing snow and ice in your area
- Reduce the amount of waste going into your bin and use
the household waste recycling centres for excess
refuse
Preparing your business for severe weather
Make sure your business takes the necessary steps to stay
operational and look after employees this winter:
- Grit in advance of severe weather such as bad frost or snow to
help keep external paths clear
- Maintain good lighting levels both inside and outside of a
building which is vital during the darker
seasons
- Encourage employees to report any hazards they spot in the
workplace
- Invest in regular planned maintenance around the workplace
including clearing paths, walkways and car parks
- Consider employees who travel and drive to and
for work. Preparing in advance for changeable weather could
really help and save someone in difficult situation.
- Have your heating system checked by a qualified heating
engineer
- Check your business continuity plan and keep contact details to
hand
- Check for loose roof tiles and gaps where water
could enter
- Move stock higher than the flood level to protect it
- Check that business insurance is adequate and
up-to-date
