Survey of businesses in Ormskirk about challenges and opportunities they face

With high streets facing continuing challenges, West Lancashire Borough Council is seeking the views of Ormskirk businesses to find out what challenges and opportunities they are having to deal with.

Ormskirk town centre is faring better than some of its counterparts and the Council believes Ormskirk provides a good offer to visitors. A range of facilities, including a large number of independent shops and restaurants, are complemented by the traditional Ormskirk street market which brings in many visitors every Thursday and Saturday.

New cafes, bars and restaurants that have recently opened include Love to Eat, Barnyard, Cork, and Mister Miyagi as well as national chains, such as Starbucks and Costa showing faith in the town.

However, with the continuing difficulties facing retail centres, including changing shopping habits and competition from the Internet, the Council is conducting a survey of town centre businesses to obtain their views on these demands. The consultation also explores how a Business Improvement District (BID) in Ormskirk town centre may support aspirations of businesses and the Town Centre Management Group’s work to help Ormskirk have an even brighter and more vibrant future.

The Council contacted a sample number of businesses about the survey, but any Ormskirk town centre business can take part. Businesses who want to take part should contact the Economic Regeneration team on 01695 712679 or email lets.talk@westlancs.gov.uk. The survey ends on Friday 28 July 2017.

Councillor Ian Moran, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council and portfolio holder for Economic Regeneration, said: “The Council is working well with partners on the Town Centre Management Group to make Ormskirk an even better place to work, shop and do business. I would urge businesses to take part in this consultation as they have a key role to play to helping to shape Ormskirk's future, identifying new opportunities and advise us on challenges that are facing businesses in Ormskirk."

The Ormskirk Town Centre Management Group is made up of a number of local organisations including Business in the Community, Ormskirk Community Partnership, Edge Hill University, Edge Hill Students’ Union and West Lancashire Borough Council. The group's aim is to implement the Ormskirk Town Centre Strategy, and more information on this can be found at Regeneration.

Councillor Moran added: “The partnership working the Council is involved in with the town centre management group shows how the authority provides good value for money. The Council is working well with other organisations towards making a better future for Ormskirk town centre.”
