Local residents will soon be sent a request to check the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct.
This is part of West Lancashire Borough Council’s annual voter registration canvass. This aims to ensure the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. It also gives local people an opportunity to check if they’re registered.
It’s essential for a healthy democracy that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to, and for those who need to, registering is now easier than ever with the online system of registration.
Kim Webber, Electoral Registration Officer, said: "Anyone who wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at elections in the next 12 months, simply check the form we send you when it arrives and return it as promptly as possible."
If you’re not currently registered, the Council's request form will give you information explaining how to do this, or you can just go online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
This is particularly important for anyone who has moved home as, if you have changed address in the last year, you may need to register at your new address. So please do check the form and make any updates on it as soon as it arrives. Instructions how to respond are printed on the form.
You must respond to the form EVEN if all the information correct.
The Council is legally obliged to send reminders and employ canvassers to visit non-responding properties, so please respond promptly.
Being on the electoral register also impacts on your credit score as it provides valuable proof of your identity and address to lenders. If you are not registered it can cause delays when you apply for credit, and some organisations may turn you down if they feel they cannot confirm who you are or where you live.
