Green Belt Study (2011)

We prepared a Green Belt study as part of the evidence base for the 2012 Local Plan.  Its purpose was to assess parcels of Green Belt land around existing settlement areas and to establish whether or not this land should still be included within the Green Belt designation.

Please note the following important points:

  • The study is not a review of Green Belt policy - this remains unchanged
  • The study does not identify land to be released from the Green Belt. Whether or not any sites are released for development is a decision for the Local Plan.

We carried out the study alongside Knowsley and Sefton Councils (external link). They appointed independent consultants to validate the assessment. In our case the assessment was validated by Lancashire County Council.

The material below is part of the background evidence for the 2012 Local Plan.  More up-to-date evidence is being prepared for the new Local Plan Review; this may supersede the documents linked to below.

Addendum

The Green Belt Study was finalised and published in December 2011. The Council subsequently received a further submission containing more detailed comments. Given Local Plan preparation was ongoing, it was considered pertinent that the Council take account of the submission.  To this end, the Council prepared an Addendum to the Study to be read alongside the main Green Belt Study
