Construction begins on Maryvale in Skelmersdale as landmark shared ownership scheme breaks ground
West Lancashire Borough Council is celebrating a major milestone in the delivery of new affordable homes with construction now underway at the Maryvale shared ownership housing development in Skelmersdale.
The start of works marks the next stage for the scheme which was approved in October 2025. It will deliver 29 high-quality shared ownership homes, helping local people take their first steps onto the property ladder.
Delivered in partnership with Tawd Valley Developments, the scheme includes a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes designed to meet local housing needs while creating a sustainable new community in Skelmersdale.
Shared ownership offers an affordable route into homeownership, enabling eligible residents to purchase a share of a property and increase that share over time, with the long-term goal of owning their home outright.
Councillor Neil Furey, Chair for Communities and Environment Committee, said: "Today's start on site is an exciting moment for the Maryvale development and a significant step forward in our commitment to providing more affordable housing opportunities for local residents.
“As construction begins, we are turning our plans into reality and delivering homes that will help people and families achieve their ambition of owning their own home.
“Schemes like Maryvale demonstrate our determination to invest in West Lancashire's communities, support local housing needs and create places where people can put down roots and build a secure future."
The Maryvale development is the second shared ownership scheme delivered by the Council and the first of its kind in Skelmersdale.
When completed, the homes will feature modern, energy-efficient design, including electric vehicle charging points, integrated kitchen appliances and off-road parking.
Construction is expected to continue over the coming months, with the completed development providing a valuable boost to the Borough's affordable housing offer.
