Council to support long-term grassroots sport for JMO leisure investment

West Lancashire Borough Council has announced significant investment by the JMO Sports Park in Skelmersdale as part of an enhanced long-term agreement that will strengthen local leisure provision for residents across West Lancashire.

The investment has enabled JMO to secure the long-term future of the facility, unlocking a programme of upgrades designed to modernise the site and increase capacity for community sport.

The investment will support the continued growth of grassroots football and help ensure that high quality facilities remain available for local clubs, leagues and residents.

JMO are working towards a long-term agreement that will foster a new partnership between JMO and the West Lancashire Junior Football League, ensuring a sustainable future for one of the region’s largest and most active grassroots football organisations.

Key improvements planned or already underway include:

  • Full replacement of the south full size pitch, which has been out of action for match play for over 12 months.
  • Remedial works to the north pitch to bring it back up to the required standard.
  • Installation of new eco-friendly LED floodlighting on the south pitch, improving energy efficiency and lighting quality.
  • Upgrades and redecoration of the clubhouse, enhancing the experience for players, volunteers and visitors.

Councillor Carl Coughlan, Lead Member for Leisure, said: “This investment represents a major step forward for local leisure provision. The improvements at JMO will provide high quality, modern facilities for residents and clubs, supporting participation, community activity and the continued growth of grassroots football in our Borough.”

“The JMO facility is really important to local people and I’m delighted we have been able to help secure its future for everyone who uses the Park.”

The works are due to be completed by June 2026. Some improvements have already been delivered in recent weeks.

The enhanced facilities aim to increase participation in sport and physical activity, contributing to wider health and wellbeing benefits for communities across West Lancashire.
