Major investment secured for children's play areas in Skelmersdale
West Lancashire Borough Council has secured £270,000 of Government funding to deliver improvements to playgrounds in Skelmersdale.
The funding has been awarded through the Government’s Playground Fund and will support improvements at Ennerdale Play Area, Inglewhite Play Area and Stanley Coronation Park over the next two years.
The investment will help create high-quality, accessible and inclusive play spaces, providing opportunities for children of different ages and abilities to play, be active and enjoy time outdoors.
The playgrounds were selected following engagement with children and young people, parents and carers, community organisations and local councillors through surveys and consultation activities, helping ensure investment is focused where it is needed most.
The Council will now begin developing detailed plans for the three sites, including design work, procurement and delivery arrangements over the next two years. Improvements are expected to start coming forward during 2027 with all funding to be delivered by March 2028.
The playground improvements form part of the Council's ongoing commitment to enhancing parks and open spaces across the Borough.
Alongside the Playgrounds Fund investment, work is also progressing on play facility improvements at Beacon Country Park, Richmond Park in Burscough and Coronation Park in Ormskirk.
Councillor Neil Furey, Committee Chair for Communities and Environment, said: "We are delighted to have secured £270,000 of external funding to invest in playground facilities in Skelmersdale.
"Playgrounds are important community assets that give children the opportunity to play, develop and spend time outdoors with family and friends.
"This funding will help us deliver improvements that are accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for local families, while complementing the wider investment we are making in parks and play facilities across the Borough.
"We look forward to sharing further details as plans for the projects develop."
Further details on the proposed improvements at each site will be shared as plans are developed.
